A former Australian Junior Tennis champion, Paul took up golf at age 13 and at 16 broke par. He joined the PGA Tour of Australasia in 1999 and has played consistently on his home tour ever since. In 2003 he debuted on the Japan Tour where he enjoyed a sensational rookie season with five top-10s, including runner-up efforts at the Suntory Open and the Bridgestone Open. He won twice in Japan in 2004 and once again in 2005. His breakthrough however came at the 2006 Jacob's Creek Open in Australia which, due to its co-sanctioning status with the Nationwide Tour, gave him a leg up to the secondary US circuit. By the end of 2006 Sheehan finished 20th on the Nationwide Tour money list, giving him his first start on the USPGA Tour.
