Young guns set for Mississippi

Australian Open champion Cameron Davis and former U.S. Amateur winner Curtis Luck lead the Australasian charge when the Web.com Tour resumes this week at a new event on the schedule in Mississippi.

""The former amateur standouts are part of an eight strong Down Under contingent at the North Mississippi Classic, the first in a run of seven straight tournaments on the secondary Tour.

Rhein Gibson, Brett Drewitt, Stuart Appleby and Jamie Arnold join fellow Tour regular Luck and tournament invite Davis at the Country Club of Oxford alongside New Zealanders Steve Alker and Tim Wilkinson.

Luck comes into the week off a T5 finish at the Savannah Championship a fortnight ago, a performance that has attracted the attention of local analysts.

The 21-year-old is listed as one of the top-10 players on the Tour’s weekly “Power Rankings” thanks to his finish in Georgia where a final round 65 jumped him 16 places up the standings.

Since earning status on the Web.com Tour this year Luck has only shown glimpses of the game which saw him win the 2016 U.S. Amateur but his credentials are beyond doubt and some sustained good play seems likely in coming weeks.

Rhein Gibson is the best of the Australasians at this point in the year after back-to-back third place finishes to start the season.

He missed his first cut of the year last start but his form suggests that was just a blip on the radar and at 10th on the money list his motivation to grab top spot and full playing rights on the 2019 PGA TOUR will be strong.

Brett Drewitt is also in good shape on the earnings table after a decent start to the season though will be looking to turn around some indifferent recent play.

He has missed three cuts in his last five starts to remain just outside the all-important top-25 in money earned, a slide he will be keen to turn around this week.

Meanwhile, Jamie Arnold and Stuart Appleby both have work to do after less than spectacular starts to the season.

Arnold has recovered some form in recent weeks with six of his last eight rounds in the 60’s but more is needed after a run of three straight missed cuts the previous month.
