2009 Morobe Open Champion Michael Wright has burst out of the blocks in the opening round of the Morobe Open, firing an 8-under 63 at Lae Golf Club.
Wright went out with a 4-under 32, and finished strong with a closing 4-under 31, which included an eagle at the 525m par five 16th hole.
Wright has a two shot lead over defending Champion Damien Jordan while rookie Professional Troy Moses and former PGA Pro-Am Series Sunshine Swing Order of Merit winner Tim Hart are well positioned a further shot back.
“I played really nicely on course today and although a soft bogey at the 15th hole threatened to bring my round to a grinding holt, it was nice to bounce back with an eagle at the 16th,” Wright said.
“Although not a long course, you need to be accurate off the tees to give yourself a chance at shooting a number. Hopefully I can continue hit fairways and greens and give myself plenty of birdie opportunities over the final three days.”
Round two of the Morobe Open is currently underway.
