Cameron Smith’s British Open prospects have been given a boost after his best individual round in five months to finish inside the top 30 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

Cameron SmithAmerican Nate Lashley completed one of the most emotional victories in PGA TOUR history to win by six strokes from Doc Redman but Smith will also have left Detroit with a spring in his step courtesy of a seven birdie, 5-under 67.

Not since the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open has Smith completed 18 holes on the PGA TOUR so far under par, rising 23 spots on the leaderboard on Sunday, finishing the week ranked seventh in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green and tied for 15th in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green.

Since he was tied for sixth at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship Smith has endured a lean run, five missed cuts and a best finish of tied for 51st at The Masters in his past 10 starts.

Statistically he has been hurt off the tee which is why his tee-to-green display in Detroit will be so encouraging to he and coach Grant Field.

Smith was tracking to be the highest finisher of the Australasian players until Kiwi Danny Lee dropped three birdies in a four-hole stretch late in his fourth round to finish one stroke ahead of Smith in a tie for 21st.

The other four Aussies in the field all failed to make the cut.

It was a lean week for the Australasian players on the Korn Ferry Tour with Tim Wilkinson, Steven Alker and Brett Drewitt all suffering final round slides.

Wilkinson (72), Alker (72) and Drewitt (77) were all over par on Sunday, Drewitt spiraling down the leaderboard with four bogeys and a double-bogey blotting the scorecard.

It was also a difficult final round for Peter Fowler in the US Senior Open in Indiana won in convincing fashion by Steve Stricker.

Tied for 30th through three rounds, Fowler played the front nine in even par but dropped four shots on the back nine to fall into a tie for 43rd. Former US Open champ Michael Campbell missed the cut on the number.
