Brett Drewitt will make his major championship debut after coming through a playoff to be one of four Aussies to earn a place in the field for next week’s US Open at Sectional Qualifying.
With Jason Day, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith already exempt, the Aussie tally to tee it up at Pebble Beach Golf Links now stands at eight after Drewitt, Matthew Jones, Marcus Fraser and Aaron Baddeley each secured one of the 75 spots up for grabs among 927 competitors who advanced to Sectional Qualifying throughout the US as well as in Canada, England and Japan.
Drewitt, who shot 68 in the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am during the 2017 PGA TOUR season, had to win a playoff against American Joo-Young Lee at Springfield Country Club in Ohio in order to snare the fifth and final spot on offer.
While Springfield Country Club will now always hold a special place in Drewitt’s heart there was anguish for Victorian Lucas Herbert who finished 36 holes just one shot further back, now the second alternate from that particular qualifier should players withdraw.
Now a part-time professional, veteran Marcus Fraser wound back the clock to earn a fourth US Open appearance, the last of which was in 2015.
Tied for 45th in the 2007 US Open at Oakmont Country Club, Fraser qualified for Pebble Beach by finishing tied for third at the qualifier at Walton Heath Golf Club in England, Kiwi amateur Daniel Hillier also snaring one of the 14 spots with a second round of 6-under 66 at Walton Heath’s New Course.
Hillier was one of two Kiwi players to earn a place at Pebble Beach with ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth champion Ryan Fox finishing tied for seventh alongside Aussie Aaron Baddeley to secure one of the 14 spots on offer at Scioto Country Club in Ohio.
Matthew Jones will be hoping to qualify for the weekend for the first time in his fourth US Open appearance after the 2015 Australian Open champion was tied for fifth at the Northwood Club in Dallas, Texas.
