Red-hot local hope Thomas Detry brought Wade Ormsby’s Belgian Knockout charge to an end as the South Australian was the only Aussie to advance past the first round of the knockout stage.
Ormsby and Queensland’s Jake McLeod were the only Aussies to qualify for the match play portion of the tournament after 36 holes with McLeod falling to Frenchman Gregory Havret in the round of 64, Havret going on to feature in the playoff for third and fourth.
In the first of his nine-hole stroke play matches Ormsby accounted for England’s David Horsey by two shots and made a strong start to his match against Detry in the round of 32.
Birdies at the second and third holes gave Ormsby an early two-shot cushion, a lead that evaporated at the very next hole when Detry’s birdie and Ormsby’s bogey brought the pair back level.
The Belgian’s birdie was the first of a run of three straight, Ormsby only able to reduce the deficit to one shot with a birdie at the seventh hole.
Qualifying for the match play in 11th position, Italian Guido Migliozzi defeated Pedro Oriol, Adrian Otaegui, David Law, Bernd Wiesberger, Ewen Ferguson and Darius Van Driel on his way to a second European Tour win of the season.
On Europe’s Staysure Tour, Peter O’Malley birdied the final three holes in succession to finish tied for 13th at the Senior Italian Open at the Villaverde Resort in Fagagna.
Tied for 10th at the start of the third and final round, O’Malley was 2-over on his round through 12 holes before a run of four birdies in his final six holes enabled him to post 1-under 71, four shots behind winner Barry Lane who defeated Marc Farry in a playoff.
