New Zealand’s Greg Turner has equalled his best finish on Europe’s Staysure Tour with a tie for third at the European Tour Destinations Senior Classic in Spain.

Greg TurnerOn a weekend of near misses for the Kiwis, Turner shot three rounds of 69 to finish four shots shy of Spaniard José Manuel Carilles, matching his best result on the seniors circuit two years earlier at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open.

Beginning the final round in a tie for fifth, Turner made par at each of his first six holes before making a move courtesy of an eagle at the par-5 seventh, birdies at 12 and 15 and a lone bogey at the 16th elevating him into the top three.

Fresh off his runner-up finish a week earlier Peter O’Malley also made a move in the right direction on Sunday, a 2-under 70 moving him up into a tie for 13th to be 16th on the moneylist.

The news wasn’t quite so positive for Peter Fowler who started the final round level with Turner in a tie for fifth but dropped to a tie for 24th due to a 4-over 76 that included an eagle, a double bogey and four bogeys.

David McKenzie was the sole Aussie in action on the Champions Tour, finishing tied for 30th at the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship in Akron Ohio.

Won by South African Retief Goosen by two shots in a tournament where birdies were hard to come by, McKenzie made a bright start with an even-par 70 in the first round but was unable to stay on the right side of par in his remaining three rounds.
