Cold, wet and blustery conditions met the 127-strong fieldfor the opening round of the PGA Southern Division Trainee Championships at theTocumwal Golf and Bowls Club.

"JoshRecent heavy rain and strong winds saw many trees collapsearound the layout but the golf course was still in excellent playing condition.

The first round was contested on the Presidents Course withsome impressive scores considering the weather conditions with a total of 30players at par or better.

The overnight leader is Joshua Stewart from the Gailes GolfClub in Queensland with a round of 4-under 68.

He is closely followed by his house-mates for the week;Western Australians Brody Martin & Travis Lord who both recorded scores of3-under 69. Four players share fourth on 2-under 70 with another 10 players on1-under 71.

Two highlights of the day were eagles on par-4’s – JessicaCowie, Trainee at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club, on the 17th & MarcoZirov, Trainee at the Eastlake Golf Club, on the 6th Hole.

Earlier in the week the PGA Trainees hosted a Junior Clinicfor local Primary Schools. Due to the inclement weather the clinic was movedinside the Clubhouse where the juniors enjoyed fun chipping and putting gamesand learnt some valuable tips from the PGA Trainees.

Later in the week Trainees will also visit some localPrimary Schools to conduct further Junior Clinics.

The second round will be played on the Captain’s course withplay beginning from 7.30am.

The rain is forecasted to stay away for the remainder of thetournament however the high winds will still be a factor for the players.
