Curlewis Golf Club’s Year 3 Trainee, Deyen Lawson ran away with victory today in the 2015 Coca-Cola Rich River Trainee Classic after carding an excellent 4-under final round of sixty-eight.

As predicted, it was going to take a great round to catch overnight leader Taylor Cooper, who went into the 4th-round in great form and as the strong favourite on 9-under par and 2 shots ahead of Lawson.

Lawson commenced his final-day pursuit of Cooper in spectacular fashion with 4 birdies in the first 5 holes to grab a 1 shot lead, before stumbling slightly with a bogey at the par-3 8th hole to round the turn at 3-under for the day.

Cooper played his usual steady game, combining pin-point iron play with solid putting in carding a front-nine, 2-under par to sit at a total of 11-under with 9 holes to play and a 1 shot lead over Lawson.

In what initially appeared to be a back-nine, 2 horse race for the Rich River title, a 3rd contender emerged from the pack with South Australia, Brad Moules making a charge with 4 birdies on holes 10 to 15 to be 9-under with 3 holes to play.  The Moules charge coincided with Cooper making a triple-bogey at the par-3 13th hole after finding a hazard and Lawson making an eagle on the par-5 11th hole.

With 3 holes to play and numerous lead changes, the tournament saw Cooper on 6-under, Lawson on 12-under and Moules 3 shots back from Lawson with a slight chance for an upset.

Lawson however, held his nerve and finished par, par, bogey for a final 72-hole total of 11-under to win by 1 shot over Moules, who did his best to catch the eventual winner with a spectacular back-nine of thirty-one.

In his acceptance speech, Lawson thanked the long-term support of the Rich River Golf Club in hosting the Trainee Classic for a record 28th year.  With the course again in perfect condition, Trainees across Australia enjoyed the event and look forward to another great Trainee event in 2016.
