"DeyenLawson fired an emphatic 7-under 65 which included an extraordinary two eagles and six birdies.

After commencing his round on the back nine, Lawson made the most of the morning conditions racing to 9-under through his opening 14 holes courtesy of an impressive eagle-birdie-eagle stretch on holes 1-3.

The forecasted strong breeze crept into play over Lawson’s closing holes, forcing bogeys at the 6th and 8th to finish 7-under the card.

Lawson, the current New South Wales and Queensland Trainee Champion, is looking to affix the Victorian title to his name and assert his east coast domination.

Fellow Victorian Kevin Smith sits in outright second after a solid round of 3-under 69 with just the single blemish on the card coming with a bogey on the par five 14th.

Play got underway in calm conditions before a howling westerly breeze made it’s away across the Tocumwal layout.

With wind gusts in excess of 60km/h, play became increasingly difficult throughout the afternoon with several balls oscillating on the greens.

It was former PGA Tour of Australasia Professional Adam Porker and New South Welshman Luke Bessant who handled the afternoon conditions best with 1-under rounds of 71.

Second round action starts Wednesday from 7:30am on the Captains course with the wind speed expected to decrease overnight.

The CPM Southern PGA Trainee Championship will be contested from May 4 – 8 at Tocumwal Golf Club in New South Wales.
