Defending champion Deyen Lawson has continued where he left off at the Bundaberg Motor Group Queensland PGA Trainee Championship, taking the first round lead after an opening round 4-under 68 at Coral Cove Golf Club.

""Lawson, who hails from Curlewis Golf Club in Victoria, opened his round with two birdies in four holes before an eagle on the par 5 6th got his momentum really flowing.

"I certainly started the way I wanted given I only made one par on the back nine, I hope to keep some of the bogies I made off the scorecard for the rest of the week," said Lawson.

"I’ve been up here (Queensland) for more than a week now playing in a few pro-ams on the Sunshine Coast, so my preparation going into this week was almost perfect."

"I felt like I played pretty good at the NSW/ACT PGA Trainee Championship a few weeks ago trying to defend my title there, though a stretch of 10 over par during the middle of the tournament put an end to my chances, so I am really keen to go back-to-back here in Queensland".

Chasing Lawson is New South Welshman Josh Rindfleish and Peregian Springs Trainee Dane McArdle who both carded rounds of 3-under 69, with Gympie Golf Club Trainee Kody Louis shooting an opening round 70 to be just two off the lead.

The second round will commence tomorrow morning at 7:00am and with the wind due to increase on Thursday at the seaside layout, tomorrow’s round could prove pivotal heading into the final two rounds.

A free junior clinic will be staged at Coral Cove Golf Club tomorrow starting at 4pm and juniors of all levels are welcome to join in the festivities.
