Continuing his form throughout the tournament Victorian Deyen Lawson again fired an even par 72 round which saw him finish the tournament at -6 under par and win the 2014 Bundaberg Motor Group Queensland PGA Trainee Championship.

Lawson headed into the final round with a 10 shot buffer over his nearest professional rivals. With conditions consistent to the third round Lawson was looking to extend this lead.

"This golf course is a great challenge and I have really enjoyed the greens this week. My putting has been my strength and if I can keep this going I should be in a good position to score well" said Lawson.

In a confident position it was then up to his fellow competitors to chase down the lead and Taylor Cooper rose to the challenge early with two birdies on his opening holes. A bogey on the short par 4 5th saw him go a shot back but he recovered well to birdie the next two holes and be 3 under after nine holes. A bogey free nine holes on the back nine with a birdie on the Par 6 saw him finish with the best score of the day at 4 under par 68 and Even par for the tournament.

Another notable score for the day was from leading female Carly Beck who more than matched her male competitors with a 3 under par score 69 after her third round score of 1 under par. Beck received a $500.00 Bursary reward for her efforts which is proudly donated by Harris & Harris Advertising and Marketing each year to the female Trainee with the best gross score for the tournament.

"I am so appreciative of this result and what opportunities it can bring" said Beck. "This is such a well run tournament and thanks must be given to all those that ensure its success each year. I will be putting this money toward those costs we have to make it to similar events in the future."

Of the six amateurs that teed it up for the tournament only two made the cut and included Coral Cove Golf Club member Nicholas Schneider and Charlie Dann from Pelican Waters. Dann was impressive throughout the whole week and was only 1 over par heading into the final round. A 3 under par 69 for his last round saw him take out the title of Amateur Champion for the event.

But it was Lawson who remained steady throughout the final round and after heading into the back nine at one under par a costly double bogey on the par 4 13th saw him slip to one over for the day. A late rally with a birdie on the 17th saw him back to square on the card where he finished for the day. Finishing at 6 under par for the tournament Lawson was crowned the winner.

"It’s been a great event and this is an enjoyable week with so many Trainees supporting the event" said Lawson. "The Coral Cove Golf Club should be congratulated for their ongoing support of all the Trainees and I’m honoured that I can be on the Carnegie Clark Cup with other winners such as Greg Norman and Rod Pampling."

The Trainees will now return to their work and studies as they look forward to completing another successful year as they move toward their goal to becoming the next generation of PGA Professionals
