Droop and Hogan hold halfway lead

Victorian Trainee Professional Frazer Droop and defending champion Robbie Hogan hold a share of the lead at the halfway mark of the Tony Hollands Funerals Queensland PGA Trainee Championship.

Victorian Trainee Professional Frazer Droop and defending champion Robbie Hogan hold a share of the lead at the halfway mark of the Tony Hollands Funerals Queensland PGA Trainee Championship.

""Droop fired a 2-under par 70 today on Indooroopilly’s East Course to go with his 3-under 69 yesterday on the Captains Course to sit atop the leaderboard at 5-under, while Hogan fired a 1-under par 71 late in the day to join Droop.

Both Droop and Hogan enjoy a handy three shot buffer heading into the weekend, over local favourite Ben Pisani and Jarrad Santi, who shot the lowest round of the day, a 3-under par 69.

“It wasn’t easy out there today. The wind really made club selection difficult, so I am pretty happy right now to have finished the day with a two under par round,” said Droop.

“My round was up and down and it wasn’t really until I made a few birdies at the turn that I was able to get my round heading in the right direction.

“I’m absolutely loving the course and the weather, so no matter what happens over the closing two rounds, it has already been a great week.”

It wasn’t the best day for local hope and overnight leader Ben Pisani, who now finds himself three shots behind the leader.

“Conditions were certainly a little more difficult today with the westerly winds getting up throughout the day, and although I didn’t play great, deep down I am very pleased with the way I managed to grind out a score,” said Pisani.

“You really need to drive your ball well and I just didn’t do that today. The course is firming up and it is becoming more paramount that you leave your ball in the right positions if you are to give yourself an opportunity to score.

“There is plenty of golf still to be played and I am looking forward to battling it out over the final two rounds.”

The two round cut was made at 13-over par, with 51 trainee professionals ensuring they bank a cheque at the end of the week.

The 3rd round of the Tony Hollands Funerals QLD PGA Trainee Championship tees is now underway.
