After taking a three shot lead into the final round, Toukley PGA Trainee Robbie Hogan has gone to win the 2016 Tony Hollands Funerals QLD PGA Trainee Championship by four shots at the Indooroopilly Golf Club.
Starting the day on 4-under, Hogan cruised around the front-9 making a birdie on the 9th hole to turn in 35 and 5-under the card for the tournament.
Bogies on holes 10 and 11 though opened the door for his nearest rival, Caboolture Golf Club Trainee Jacob Boyce. When Boyce made eagle on the par-5 9th and then birdie on the 11th, he found himself within two shots of the lead with seven holes to play.
Firing 5-over in the next six holes saw Boyce slide out of contention and when Hogan made crucial pars on the 15th, 16th and 17th, the championship was secured. A final round 2-over 74 and a 72-hole total of 2-under the card helped Hogan to victory; a win he will cherish for a long time to come.
"I have really enjoyed this week and the support from my friends and family along with the members of Indooroopilly Golf Club has been overwhelming," said Hogan.
"I am yet to win a one round Trainee event back in NSW so to notch up two 72 hole wins this year is really satisfying and hopefully I can keep this form going".
"Jacob got pretty close there early on the back-9 and although he wasn't able to keep it going, I am confident he will be in contention for many more tournaments in his career."
Joining Boyce in a tie for second was Nick Drinkwater who birdied the last hole to card a 3-over 75, finishing two over par for the tournament.
Robbie Hogan takes home more than $6,000 for winning the Tony Hollands Funerals QLD PGA Trainee Championship and becomes the third consecutive interstate PGA Trainee to win the title in as many years. This year's tournament also made history by being the only professional tournament to play four different layouts over four different rounds at the same facility, showing the diversity of Indooroopilly Golf Club.
