Keperra Country Golf Club yesterday played host to the inaugural PGA Charity Day raising funds for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and QLD Golf Foundation.

The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is close to PGA TOUR winner and Keperra Country Club member John Senden’s heart as his son Jacob is currently fighting a brain tumour.

“It is extremely humbling to see how much support has been offered and I can’t thank all the competitors enough for helping our efforts to find a cure for what is currently the biggest killer of young kids,” Senden said to golfers at Keperra via video link.

“Jacob is a very strong kid and we are all very proud of him though if it wasn’t for the support of people like Rod and Angela Pampling, Arthur Laundy and the entire golfing community, we could not have kept our spirits as high as what we have.

“The PGA TOUR have been extremely supportive provide a Major Medical Exemption since April and although we still have some further tests in both January and March, we are all hopeful I may be back playing sometime closer to the middle of the year.

“It is great to have my mother, father and sisters in the room on what is a really special day for our family and the Keperra Country Golf Club we are all hoping to be back in Australia soon to thank everyone personally.”

It was a fitting host venue for the inaugural event where Senden, Peter Senior and many others began their golfing journey.

“The support from all segments of the industry was outstanding, and we are delighted with the outcomes achieved.”

AU$40,000 was raised with the majority of the funds going towards the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation during the golf day which featured the 2017 Australian PGA champion Cameron Smith as well as fellow Pros Rod Pampling, Deyen Lawson, Michael Sim, Peter Senior, Chris Wood and Michael Wright.

Smith, fresh off his thrilling Australian PGA Championship victory at RACV Royal Pines Resort last week teed it up with his girlfriend Jordan Ontiveros in support of the Senden family.

“He (John) only lives five minutes away from me and I grew up watching him play,” said Smith.

“I have also played practice rounds with him at Major Championships; he is a very knowledgeable guy.

“I wish him and his family all the best.”

The PGA Charity Day was truly an industry event with contributions from Golf Australia, Golf Queensland, GMAQ, industry suppliers, surrounding golf clubs and PGA Professionals.
