Seventh Heaven for Hawkes

An unbelievable round of 10-under 56 secures Simon Hawkes the new course record at Geelong and his seventh pro-am victory of 2017.

""The inaugural Geelong Golf Club Pro-Am at their redeveloped nine hole layout featured a quality field with many ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia members taking up the chance to test themselves on the short course.

Terry Pilkadaris, playing in his only event on the pro-am swing in Victoria shot a respectable 4-under 62.  Recent winner Peter Wilson with his daughter Chloe on caddying duties over the school holidays started well with 2-under on the first nine holes but could not do any better on the second lap around and finished on 2-under 64.

Jack Wilson and Kris Mueck both coming off a strong showing in Bairnsdale on Saturday both began well.  Wilson was 4-under on the first loop but it was Mueck who stormed into contention after completing his first nine holes in just 27 to be 6-under.

However he failed to capitalise on his second time through, only managing par on 10, 11, 12 and the short par 5 13th before bogeying the 14th to end his chance of reeling in Hawkes. He eventually finished in a tie for second with Jack Wilson on 8-under 58.

Hawkes set the tone early with four straight birdies to open his round. A bogey on the short par 3 6th looked to have stopped his run but a chip in eagle on the 9th saw him through the first nine in 5-under 28.

Hawkes second look at the holes was almost a carbon copy. Four straight birdies to start the nine and take him to 9-under before a bogey on the par 3 14th. He then birdied the 16th and 18th to finish with the low round of the day and new course record, his second of the year and seventh pro-am victory in 2017.

Hawkes now heads to Canada to try his luck at the Canadian Tour Q-School before returning to Australia later in the year to see if he can keep his pro-am form going for the remainder of the Victorian Pro-Am series which returns in September.
