Defending Champion Damien Jordan has backed up his solid opening round with a 7-under 64 to take a two shot lead into the third round of the Morobe Open.

""After some heavy overnight rain the course this morning was playing very differently to yesterday’s opening round, though by the time Jordan had teed off, the course had somewhat dried out, giving up a few more birdie opportunities for the afternoon field.

Jordan has played flawlessly over the opening two rounds, sitting two shots ahead of first round leader Michael Wright, with a further shot back to 2015 PNG Open Champion Josh Cabban.

“My ball striking was really solid today, and after almost holing my approach shots on both the 5th and 6th holes it really gives you the confidence to try and make more birdies,” said Jordan.

““I have really prepared well heading into this week and have spent the last two weeks and have worked hard on my chipping and putting at my home club, which has so far paid dividends over the opening two rounds.

“My strategy this week is to remain patient and accept that you’re not going to make all the putts. You really need to remain focused and hang in there, as you never know what’s around the corner.”

The experienced Michael Wright is lurking only two shots behind Jordan heading into the weekend, and is looking forward to what may play out over the final two rounds.

“I have played consistently over the opening two rounds, with the highlight of my round today no doubt being my 3 wood into the par five 9th hole, setting up a birdie to close out the round,” said Wright.

“Tomorrow is another day and although you can’t win the tournament tomorrow, it’s about putting yourself in a position for the final round. Hopefully we will see a few more putts fall and give myself a good chance on Sunday.”

Round three of the 2017 Morobe Open tees off tomorrow morning at 7am with the lead group of Damien Jordan, Michael Wright and Josh Cabban due to tee off at 12:10pm.
