After
coming so close in the past, New Zealand professional Doug Holloway has finally
won the New Pioneer Motors City of Mackay Open, after the tournament was reduced
to 54 holes.

"DougAfter holding
a two shot lead heading into the final round, Holloway found the going tough early
in his round, and with contenders breathing down his neck, he knew he needed
something special to turn his play around.

That
something came at the 10th, and with an eagle three at the par-5, ensuring
Holloway regained the lead.

A birdie at
the 11th, followed by five consecutive pars, placed Holloway in the
box seat with only two holes to play.

A further
birdie at 17, gave Holloway the buffer needed to claim a two shot win.

"I am excited
to have finally won here in Mackay following close to a decade of trips. To have
my wife Rebecca and four month old son Jack with me makes the win so much more
special," said Holloway.

"The week has
been a difficult one with the weather, but one that rewarded players that were
able to remain patient in the testing conditions."

"It’s a
wonderful feeling to be back in the winner’s circle, and I hope the weather
will be a little kinder for us this week in Rockhampton."

Local hope
and two time winner of the City Mackay Open, Anthony Johnson will rue the bogey
he made at his second last hole, but was happy to once again contend at his
hometown pro-am.

"I have been
a member here at the Mackay Golf Club for 23 years and this year is probably
the best I have seen the course in that time," said Johnson.

"It is great
to see Doug win, as we are somewhat of the veterans still playing out here on
the Sunshine Swing. I know it’s a special time when you win in front of your
family, so I hope he enjoys that moment with Rebecca and Jack over the next few
days."

Many of the Professionals
will now make the journey down the Bruce Highway as the PGA Sunshine Swing of
the PGA Pro-Am Series stops in for the Rockhampton Pro-Am.

With more
than 150 millimetres of rain in Rockhampton over the past 48 hours drenching
the course, players will no doubt be conditioned for the wet conditions
following the past four days in Mackay.
