New South Wales professional Rhein Gibson will be the one to catch tomorrow, as he look’s to claim the inaugural Meriton Gold Coast Invitational at the Lakelands Golf Club.

New South Wales professional Rhein Gibson will be the one to catch tomorrow, as he look’s to claim the inaugural Meriton Gold Coast Invitational at the Lakelands Golf Club.

With the opening two rounds of the scratch stableford competition being played between the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club and Arundel Hills Country Club, consistency would be pivotal for professionals to finish atop the leaderboard.

Gibson’s steady opening round of 37 points at Sanctuary Cove had him a tie for third, four shots behind overnight leader Steven Jones. A more consistent round at Arundel Hills today however, saw Gibson sign for 39 points and a one shot lead over Adam Groom.

Gibson has been in good form over recent months, even making the cut at last month’s British Open. "I really enjoy playing golf in sunny Queensland and it is great to see this event being played at some of the best courses the Gold Coast has to offer," said Gibson.

"Today’s round was certainly more consistent than yesterday’s, though it could have been even better if I was able to keep the soft bogies off my card. Tomorrow is a new day and although it is not going to be easy, it would be nice to walk away as the inaugural winner of the Gold Coast Invitational."

This is the inaugural Meriton Gold Coast Invitational, however Groom in somewhat of the defending champion after claiming the 2013 Meriton Sydney Invitational. On the back of his victory last year, Groom will looking for early birdies tomorrow to mount an early charge on Gibson in the attempt to claim back-to-back Invitational wins.

In the ALPG division, Kristie Smith will take a one shot lead over Ashley Ona into tomorrow’s final round to be played at the Glades Golf Club. Smith sits on 69 points, with Ona on 68, while first round leader Ashlee Dewhurst sits a further two shots behind in third.

Round 3 of the Meriton Gold Coast Invitational gets underway at 8:00am, with the leading 30 PGA professionals playing the Lakelands Golf Club. Professionals that failed to make the two round cut set at 66 points, will tee it up at Glades Golf Club.
