Cain goes back-to-back in Blackwater

Marcus Cain has held off all challengers over his closing holes at the Blackwater Pro-Am to claim a back-to-back victory.

Marcus Cain has held off all challengers over his closing holes at the Blackwater Pro-Am to claim a back-to-back victory.

Firing 6-under 66, Cain’s 11-under total was good enough for a one shot win over the fast finishing Brendan Smith, who closed with 7-under 65.

It was a tight final round as Cain and Smith headed to their final hole, but it was to be Cain’s day after he holed an eight-foot putt for a closing birdie.

"It is always an enjoyable experience to come back to the mining towns and play these courses. It was great to see 35 Professionals make the journey out this year," said Cain following his win.

"I really didn’t know how tight it was coming down the stretch, but I guess the eight footer I made for birdie on the final green proved to be the difference."

The tournament has seen an incredible turn in form for Smith, who has been recovering from a back injury for the past two months.

"To be brutally honest, it’s just great to be back out on the course playing; I haven’t picked up a club for the last couple of months," remarked Smith.

"I came here with really low expectations and that could have possibly been the key to my performance at Blackwater over the past two days. I am not going to get too far ahead of myself and just continue to enjoy the opportunity to play."

Professionals will now make their way further west for the Emerald Pro-Am, as Cain looks to continue on with his form in the Onsite Rental Group Mining Town Series.
