Alex edges out field to win Southport Pro-Am


Taking an early lead Alex Edge held on to win the Southport Pro-Am on theSunshine Swing of the PGA Pro-Am Series.

"AlexFiring 5-under 66 in the morning field, Edge spent the day waiting to seeif it would get him over the line for his first win in Queensland.

The PGA Trainee graduate claimed his first win on the Sunshine Swing byone shot from Michael Hansen.

Edge’s firstwin comes on a course that he had never seen or set foot on previously.

"This is myfirst time to Southport Golf Club and to walk away with a win wasn’t somethingI had imagined when I woke up this morning," said Edge.

"It wasn’t anideal preparation having not played the course before, but I really need tothank my fellow PGA Member Matthew Ballard for giving me a few notes on what tohit on certain tees before I teed off."

"WithoutMatt’s advice I certainly wouldn’t be here accepting this winner’s cheque."

"I have beendoing some really good work with my coach Jason King back home in Sydney, andto secure a win here at such a significant tournament, really gives me thedrive to win more events."

At 3-underthe card Mitchell A. Brown finished outright third with a group of six playersrounding out the top-5 on 2-under 69.

Played forthe fourth consecutive year following a 10 year hiatus from the Pro-Am Series,the Southport Pro-Am continues to be a prominent tournament on the SunshineSwing attracting some Australia’s finest golfing talent, including StevenJeffress, Michael Sim and Terry Price.

After today’swin, Edge joins an illustrious group of past winners of the Southport Pro-Am sinceit was first played in 1981. The honour roll also includes Terry Price, KalemRichardson and Matthew Millar.

Many of the Professionalswill now head north for the Riverlakes Pro-Am which tees off on Wednesday, witha number of Professionals flying out to China for the final leg of the PGA TOURChina.
