Players headed further north for the annual Broome Open this week but it was a new event created by the PGA Members and the WA PGA Division that has people talking.

""The Nexus WS6 Broome was modelled on the new ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth event played earlier this year at Lake Karrinyup, with an added twist to bring amateurs and sponsors into the heat of the battle.

16 Professionals teamed up with 16 amateurs to create two man teams to contesting over six holes, whilst playing four best ball matchplay.

Last week’s winner of the Port Hedland Classic Kris Mueck, was one of the early departurse from the first round losing to Matt Jager and his partner Peter Coggins 2 and 1. The locals and members of Broome Golf Club had some early excitement with five of eight matches decided on 18th hole, one on the 90m shoot out hole.

Broome Open favourite and past winner Peter Cooke made his way through to the semi-finals, where they went head to head with Andrew Crabb and Des Russell. All square through the six holes they headed to the shootout hole where Andrew’s shot finished the nearest which guaranteed them through to the final.

WA swing solid performer Matt Jager was once again featuring in the top end of the field, he and his partner moving through to the final. They jumped out of the box early getting 2 up through three holes, giving them a big enough lead to hold on to win the final 2 up with 1 to play.

Players were also fully embracing the event and asking for more of it around Australia.

“This was an awesome day, super format and to see the amateurs having this much fun connecting with a Professional you know you have got it (formula) right. Congrats to Billy and Kim for coming up with the idea to add to the Open,” said Jager after his win.

“To be able to create another version of the great initiative by the PGA at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth earlier this year, that interacts the Professional and a sponsor is priceless. It great to see the players and the sponsors excited to get going. I’m hoping other events will use this great format to create this same excitement for their sponsors,” said Club Manager and PGA Member Bill Minns.

Players will now enjoy a day off enjoying the Broome sun before starting the event Thursday.
