Played from the 31 October – 2 November, PGA Professionals from around the country will be looking to qualify for this prestigious Championship with 50 positions available at state qualifying tournaments.

Following the overwhelming success of the event since its move to Hamilton Island in 2012, the three round tournament will be played for $55,000 in prizemoney.

However the biggest prize on offer is the opportunity to compete in the 2017 Australian PGA Championship co-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour. The leading two male Professionals will receive the exemption.

“The PGA Professionals Championship provides PGA Professionals who usually spend their time coaching or in Pro Shops the opportunity to show a different side of their skill set,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia.

“The week is a fierce battle on the course with the chance to compete in the Australian PGA Championship a huge motivator but outside the ropes the PGA Professionals Championship is a networking opportunity for some of Australia’s leading Club and Teaching Professionals.”

Despite Cyclone Debbie impacting many areas in the region, the Hamilton Island Golf Course layout has bounced back in a few short weeks and has returned to the exceptional condition the course is renowned for.

“Although exposed to the elements, the course has held up amazingly well and our team has worked quickly to ensure that our guests will continue to receive the golfing experience that we have become known for,” said Golf Manager Chris Bailey.

Six qualifying tournaments will be held around Australia over the coming months which will see both male and female PGA Professionals competing alongside each other.

With females teeing off the ladies markers whilst playing for the same prize pool, the championship showcases the unique opportunity golf provides to bring males and females together in the one tournament.

While the men will be eyeing a place at the Australian PGA Championship, the women will be competing for a coveted position in the 2018 Oates Women’s Vic Open which is co-sanctioned by the ALPG and LET Tour.

The winner of each qualifying tournament will also receive complimentary return airfares to Hamilton Island, plus an invite to their respective State PGA Championship on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

Playing alongside the 50 Professionals at Hamilton Island will be 52 amateurs who will compete for the title of Hamilton Island Amateur Golf Champion.

One of the most unique and memorable golfing experience in the world, the PGA Professionals Championship is an exciting week for everyone involved.

“The PGA Professionals Championship is a highlight on the PGA Professionals and amateur player’s calendars,” added Kirkman.

“The experience has become so memorable for the amateurs involved that demand for a place in the tournament has far exceeded what we are able to offer. This is a great testament the tournament as well as Hamilton Island Golf Club as a golfing destination.”
