Aussie greats head to Heathcote for legends pro-am

The inaugural City of Greater Bendigo PGA Legends Pro-Am is set to tee off at the Heathcote Golf Club on Sunday 22 March 2015.

The tournament will see domestic and international Professionals descend on Heathcote as part of the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour.

Several well-known Australian Professionals will tee it up at Heathcote Golf Club including former Alfred Dunhill Cup winner and USPGA Champions Tour winner, Rodger Davis, European Tour, New Zealand Open and Queensland PGA winner, Peter Fowler, European Tour winner, Mike Harwood, and PGA Tour of Australasia winner, Michael Clayton.

Also included in the field will be, David Merriman, Terry Price, Anthony Gilligan, Glenn Joyner and Lucien Tinkler.

E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour Chairman, Rodger Davis, is happy to be heading back to regional Victoria to play the pro-am.

"I’m really looking forward to the Legends Tour returning to regional Victoria," said Davis.

"I believe that Heathcote Golf Club, along with the City of Greater Bendigo, have opened the door for a series of events in 2016."

Due to the strong Professional presence the pro-am field will be divided into two fields, morning (7:45am) and afternoon (12:30pm), with each group consisting of two Professionals and two amateurs. 

Heathcote Golf Club Professional, Bryan Wearne, noted the condition ofthe course offers low scoring possibilities and acknowledged the support forthe tournament from both Professionals and local Government.

"The course is in excellent condition and will be set up for low scoring," said Wearne.

"It’s great to see golfers of this calibre travel to central Victoria and for the City of Greater Bendigo to get involved in the Legends Tour and golf in general."

City of Greater Bendigo Major Events Manager, Terry Karamaloudis, commended the Heathcote Golf Club for their efforts in securing the E-Z-GO PGALegends Pro-Am.

"Bendigo is really pleased to host this, our second PGA event, itcertainly lifts the profile of the sport in our region and is the latestvehicle for delivering new visitors to Bendigo, providing a positive impact forthe local economy," said Karamaloudis.

Executive Officer for the Southern Division of the PGA of Australia, David Tapping, gave praise to Wearne and the Heathcote Golf Club on their preparationin the lead up to the tournament.

"I commend PGA Member andHeathcote Golf Club Professional Bryan Wearne for the hard work he and the club have already completed to secure the pro-am and we look forward to working with the club into the future toensure the ongoing success of the tournament."

The Victorian leg of the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour comprises of five events and will commence on the Mornington Peninsula with tournaments scheduled at Eagle Ridge and Portsea Golf Club, followed by Gardiners Run in Heathcote and Growling Frog Golf Course in Whittlesea.  

Each tournament carries prizemoney of $10,000 and will count towards the 2015 E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour Order of Merit.

The E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour is managed by the PGA of Australia and is the Professional golf circuit for male Professional golfers aged 50 and over.

Approximately 60 tournaments operate throughout Australia and NewZealand, with approximately AU$1 million in prize money on offer each year.

The Tour’s most prominent events include the Australian PGA Seniors Championship, the Australian Senior Open, the New Zealand PGA Senior Championship and the Legends Tour Championship.

Other Professionals who have featured on the PGA Legends Tour include Wayne Grady and Peter Senior, while Ian Baker-Finch has added his name to the Tour for 2015 playing three tournaments on the Mornington Peninsula.
