Jason Day and Adam Scott will be bitterly disappointed with their WGC Matchplay performances but John Senden and Marc Leishman will have taken plenty of confidence from their respective weeks at Harding Park.

""Day, the defending champion and one of the pre-tournament favourites, struggled from the outset in the round robin stages and it’s difficult to find much positive in his three straight losses.

Having performed so well in the win or go home format of previous years Day seemed uncomfortable in the pool stages and couldn’t have posted a worse result.

Adam Scott suffered a similar fate and blamed an inability to adapt to slower than expected greens for his poor performance.

"The greens are so slow, way slower than I thought. I read the tour agronomy report and they were aiming for 12.5 (on the stimpmeter) and they are probably nine," Scott said after his second round loss to Paul Casey.

"I don’t know why I struggled to adapt so much but certainly the rhythm of my stroke doesn’t favour putting on slow greens."

For Marc Leishman and John Senden, though, the week was a success with both advancing from the pool stages to the round of 16.

While neither continued on to the quarter finals (both beaten by eventual finalist Gary Woodland) each could take a lot of positives surviving a difficult week in a strong field.

Neither was favoured heading into the week and both overcame more highly fancied opponents over the first three days.

Leishman’s opening round win over Justin Rose was a highlight as was Senden’s triumph over highly regarded match player Hunter Mahan.

Importantly for both in a Presidents Cup year their strong performances will have been noted by International Captain Nick Price.

While Leishman is currently holding down 10th position in the standings and Senden is only just outside automatic selection if either requires a Captain’s pick come September this week’s efforts will work in their favour.

Matt Jones, the fifth Australian to tee up in the event, had an indifferent week winning one and losing two of his encounters.
