The World Number 1 rose to the challenge at Oakmont, shooting 1-under 69 to ensure his play in the final two rounds of the tournament.
In the fourth group out off the 10th tee in the third round, Day made his intentions known early.
He fired off four birdies in his opening five holes to launch himself up the leaderboard.
Adding to his scorecard an eagle at the par-5 4th hole, counteracted by two bogeys on the front-9, Day finished his third round on 4-under 66.
As the third round was suspended due to darkness, Day is currently tied 8th on 1-over the card.
Day was the only Aussie, of the four to make the cut, to finish his third round.
With one hole still to play, Adam Scott is 2-over for the day to be T12 on the same number for the tournament.
Queenslander Cameron Smith had a mixed day on course but continues to fight. With two holes remaining in his third round he is 1-under the card and T35 on 5-over.
Marc Leishman rounds out the Aussie contingent and with just one hole to play tomorrow morning the Victorian is yet to put a birdie on his round 3 scorecard. After starting the round at even par he is now 7-over the card and T46.
The third round will resume at 7am at Oakmont with the final round to tee off at its conclusion.
