Spencer wins comfortably at Ulverstone
The Tasmanian Pro-Am series made its way to the beautiful Ulverstone Golf Club today. 34 professionals teed it up in glorious conditions, playing for a share of the $5,000 prize purse.
With the early cards returned from the course not setting the world on fire it was left to Port Sorrell Club Professional Darren Spencer, who was in the third last group of the day, to set the winning score of five-under par 67. Spencer who has had a solid week on the circuit with several top ten finishes got all components of his game together at Ulverstone today.
“I haven’t been holing anything all week, but today I couldn’t miss”, said Spencer.
With his usual caddy on the bag Spencer had a hot start to the round with birdies on three of the first four holes, two bogeys on the 7th and 8th saw him turn one under par.
“In all my years of playing here I have never been able to hit the 7th and 8th fairways, well today was no different”, Spencer told those gathered for the presentations.
The back nine was where Spencer came to play, Spencer made birdie on 10, 15, 16 and 18 to finish the back nine on four under par 32.
“I have been missing two footers all week but today the putter clicked into gear. I always enjoy playing here at Ulverstone and the course is getting better and better. To finish with a birdie on the last hole today was very important for my confidence”, Spencer commented.
OneAsia players Craig Hancock and Kalem Richardson were the next best in the field. Hancock claimed second with a fine two-under par 70 and Richardson rounded out the podium with a one-under par score of 71.
In great news for the tournament moving forward, Ulverstone President Grant Matson announced that 9/11 Bottleshop Ulverstone would be the naming rights sponsors for the next three years.
The Tasmanian swing of Southern Tour continues tomorrow at the Stanley Seaview Inn Pro-Am, spectators are welcome to attend. There are eight events on the Tasmanian Pro-Am schedule in 2012 with prizemoney in excess of $50,000.
