Choi Too Good

Michael Choi has today continued the recent good form that saw him gain status on the One Asia Tour at the recent Qualifying School.

2012 looked to have a bleak outlook for Choi who was without a tour to play before finishing in a tie for 19th at the One Asia qualifying School in mid January and gaining his card. His fortunes continued to change at today’s Fleetweld Devilbend Pro-Am when he shot an impressive five-under par 66 and is now looking at 2012 to be a breakout year with many opportunities around the corner.

Choi who was out early, mixed seven birdies and two bogies in a quality round on the tight Devilbend layout that requires precision from the tee and good putting on the fast and undulating greens. His score of 66 was five clear of the rest of the morning field and certainly gave the afternoon players a tough task in the increasing winds.

“The form has been pretty good in the New Year and it was a relief to get through One Asia Q-school. I am really looking forward to a big year. Today I made some good putts and took advantage of my opportunities. The course was great and I had a very enjoyable day”, Choi said

It was always going to be a struggle for the chasing afternoon field and no one really threatened Choi’s mark. The best of the afternoon was no surprise however with runaway Order of Merit leader Leighton Lyle continuing his great form with a round of 69 which was matched by Craig Scott.

The Devilbend course certainly held up well with only eight players in the quality field managing to better par.

The next event on the Southern Tour is the Flinders Pro-Am on Monday 6th February.
