Leighton Lyle has extended his lead on the Victorian Order of Merit with another victory at today’s Greystone Wines Yarra Yarra Invitational. Lyle didn’t have it all on his own with Andrew Martin sharing the major prize.

The Invitational, now in its second year was again a superbly run event on what is arguably Melbourne’s finest conditioned golf course.

For Lyle, it was yet another good day and he has now opened up an amazing 34 point lead after 18 events on the 2011/12 OOM.

“I had a great day out there on what was a perfect golf course, the greens are unbelievable and I had a lot of fun. It’s great to win anywhere, but to win at a championship course is even better,” Lyle said.

For Martin, it was a bit of a ‘what if’ day. He started with three straight birdies before two bogies slowed his round, birdie on the eight was followed by eagle on nine. A bogie on the 15th was then forgotten with an eagle on the 18th to finish with an up and down 67.

“I got off to a great start and possibly got a bit excited. The two eagles certainly made a huge difference and it doesn’t matter what happens before, when you eagle your last hole you always feel good. I am lucky that today it has made the difference and got me into a tie,” Martin said.

Last year’s winner Terry Pilkadaris put up a great defence of his title with a 68 to finish in outright third place.

A great day’s golf was then complimented by great entertainment and a terrific dinner which all of the sponsors and players enjoyed.

The next event on the Southern Tour is the Fleetweld Devilbend Pro-Am on Wednesday 1st of February.
