McLean Too Good
Craig McLean has taken out today’s KFC/Pizza Hut Curlewis Pro-Am with a five-under 67 on the vastly improved Curlewis Golf Club.
Curlewis has always been known as a terrific layout but as was the case with many courses, struggled through the tough times of the drought. The club decided to think outside the square and went about rectifying this by installing a water treatment plant that came online for use in late 2010 and will ensure that the course is now drought proof well into the future. The course is already seeing the difference and was today turned out in perfect condition and will certainly continue to rise up the rankings after recently being named at number 50 for public access courses in Australia.
McLean who has only fairly recently returned to Australia to live after years of coaching and playing in Asia, found the course to his liking and rattled off six birdies and the lone bogie to fire his most impressive round since his return. “I had a great time out there today on what really is a fantastic layout, you have to think your way around and ensure you hit the ball on the fairway as the rough can be quite hazards in places which is what you expect from a course that certainly has a links feel to it. The condition was perfect and I was lucky enough to take advantage of it,” McLean said.
McLean finished ahead of a chasing pack that included last year’s winner Andrew Martin and Thomas Peterson from Sweden who both shot the rounds of the afternoon with four-under par 68’s. Another shot back was OOM leader Leighton Lyle, Ash Hall, Deyen Lawson, Steve Jones, Andrew Kelly and David McKenzie.
The overall scoring was again strong with 31 players finishing the day on level par or better.
The next event on the Southern Tour is the Lonsdale Pro-Am on Tuesday 24th of February.
