Kelly Plays it Safe

Andrew Kelly has broken through for his first win on the Southern Tour at today’s Safety Beach Pro-Am.

Kelly who has only been a professional for a little over a year showed what made him a formidable competitor at the elite amateur level before turning professional. Kelly who was out in the morning field took advantage of the slightly easier conditions with a fine three-under par 64 on the tight Safety Beach layout. As the wind continued to strengthen throughout the afternoon, 64 was always going to be tough to match.

Several players tried and a number had it to two-under at different stages but in the end only Sean Crowe and Thursday’s winner Leighton Lyle could break par in the afternoon with scores of one-under par 66.

“I was very happy with my round today and had a feeling that three-under was going to be tough to beat when I finished. Other than a lapse in concentration which led to a triple bogie seven on the fifth, I could not have got much more out of my round. I only had 21 putts which is amazing and I would be happy to putt on those greens every day of the year,” Kelly said.

The feedback from Kelly in regards to the greens was echoed throughout the day by the professional field with several first time players at the venue amazed by what a small club with a small staff could produce and great credit must be given to Head Curator, Damon Quigley.

The next event on the Southern Tour is the KFC/Pizza Hut Curlewis Pro-Am on Monday 23rd of February.
