The Western Australian Golf Association and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Australia are proud to announce the staging of the Western Australian Open to be held at the Cottesloe Golf Club from the 22nd to the 25th of October 2009.

The launch event of the 2009 Summer of Golf, the Championship has secured respected car dealer John Hughes as the naming rights sponsor and will be known as “The John Hughes Geely Western Australian Open”.

In another first for the premier Western event, the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre will join the event as the Championship’s charity partner with the aim of raising awareness of Melanoma Research in Western Australia.

2009 will also mark the return of the WA Open to the consolidated PGA Tour of Australasia and will offer a professional prize purse of $110,000 which is sure to attract a number of leading professional and amateur golfers from around Australia and throughout Asia.

Previous winners of the event include legends of golf Greg Norman, Gary Player, Terry Gale and Ian Baker-Finch along with WA stars of today Stephen Leaney, Nick O’Hern and Kim Felton. The 2008 WA Open winner James Nitties from New South Wales went directly to the US PGA Tour Qualifying School following last year’s event and has had a very successful start to his career on the biggest golfing stage in the world.

The John Hughes Geely Western Australian Open will be televised locally, nationally and internationally through a highlights package on One HD.

2009 John Hughes Geely WA Open
The 2009 John Hughes Geely WA Open will be played over 72-holes stroke play with 18 holes on each of Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October, 2009 at Cottesloe Golf Club.

156 competitors will compete during rounds 1 and 2. The lowest 50 professional scores after 36 holes and any tying for 50th place plus amateurs, shall qualify for the final two rounds with the remainder eliminated. Draws for rounds 3 and 4 will be seeded.
