After the second round of the NSW PGA Championship the top of the leaderboard is very tight with Brent McCullough, James McLean and Martin Dive all tied on 9-under at the Wollongong Golf Club.
Right behind the trio is a group of six professionals within two shots of the lead making the third and final round, tomorrow, a fierce battle of golf as they all look to claim the title for their own.
The score of the day belongs to a very happy 33-year-old Brent McCullough who, in windy conditions shot 6-under the card.
“The conditions today played a lot harder than yesterday so to go out and improve my score is great,” said McCullough
“With the wind picking up I knew it was going to be tough scoring and I thought that maybe some of the guys who teed off earlier may have gone low but I knew 6-under would be a good score to put me on the leaderboard.”
McCullough who headed into the NSW PGA off the back of two missed cuts the past two weeks in Perth seems to have found his form.
“Honestly my form hadn’t been great, I felt like it wasn’t far away but I was just missing something and I knew if it clicked then I would be in good shape.”
“My short game had been good and my driver had been off but with the fairways being so wide this week driving has not been at a premium so I guess that has worked in my favour.”
Standing in the way of victory for McCullough will be his co-leaders and playing partners for tomorrow; James McLean and Martin Dive.
“Martin and James are both really long hitters so I guess that will make me the short man of the group tomorrow.”
“But if the wind is up, as is predicted, then that will work in my favour, it evens the playing field and makes the tournament more about making putts which is a strong suit of mine.”
McCullough, McLean and Dive will tee off tomorrow at the Wollongong Golf Club at 11am.
They enter the round one shot clear of Matthew Millar, Josh Younger and amateur Jake Higginbottom. While a further shot back again, on 7-under are Andre Stolz, Scott Arnold and Michael Wright.
Unfortunately, for Sydney Rooster Captain Braith Anasta his first outing as an amateur in a professional golf tournament has come to an end as he struggled to adjust to the pressures of tournament golf and missed the even par cut by shooting 20-over par.
The third and final round of the NSW PGA Championship will tee of at Wollongong Golf Club tomorrow from 7.00am.
