Four professionals share the lead following the first round of the 2010 PGA Professionals Championship that teed off at the Sandhurst Club this morning.
The national title for PGA vocational members the event is being held at the home of the PGA’s head office, the Sandhurst Club, for the second consecutive year.
PGA professionals Darren Cole (Melbourne Golf Academy, Vic), David Fearns (Bondi Golf Club, NSW), Nicholas Robb (Cromer Golf Club, NSW) and Patrick Willson (Wembley Golf Complex, WA) are all tied in the top spot on 1 under par.
Fellow PGA professionals Ben Campbell (Southport Golf Club, QLD,) Richard Harris (McLeod Country Golf Club, QLD) Mitchell Pryor (Wyong Golf Club, NSW) and Timothy Stone (The National Golf Club, Vic) are currently in second position all even for the day.
Despite the cluttered leaderboard at the close of play, the leaderboard changed constantly throughout the first day with birdies and unfortunately bogeys strewn across the scorecards of all those in the top 10.
Despite the near perfect conditions at Sandhurst today, the participants will be in for an all new challenge tomorrow, with rain predicted to plague Melbourne during the second round.
The professionals in the field are battling it out for one of two available spots in the Australian PGA Championship as well as for a share of the $60,000 prize purse.
The second round will tee off from 9.00am tomorrow with the final round concluding on Friday September 10.
The players in the field all qualified for the tournament via a series of state-wide qualifying events with the 50 man field this year made up of 18 New South Welshmen, 11 Queenslanders, 12 Victorians, 4 West Australians, 3 South Australians and 2 Tasmanians.
In addition to the title also up for grabs at the event is the Vicar’s Shield- an historic trophy dating back to 1930 that is nowadays awarded to the leading state and is calculated on the best two aggregate scores for the three rounds of competition.
