Brazel Rises to FKP Series Win

Sunday, 22 August 2010

In one of the most hotly contested events on the Queensland Sunshine Tour in recent years, Lismore professional Sam Brazel has continued his winning ways taking out the 2010 FKP Series at the Peregian Springs Golf Club. Brazel shot a final round 3 under par 69 to leapfrog overnight leaders Taylor Cooper and Aaron Black who ended up tying for second place one shot behind.
“It’s great to win a series like this as you really need to show consistency over the two weeks to walk away with the win. To do this puts me in good frame of mind heading into qualifying schools later in the year” Brazel said during his acceptance speech.
In its ninth consecutive year, the FKP Series came down to a shoot out between 5 players on the final days play, all staking their claim to becoming the 2010 FKP Series Champion. The scene was set and it would be Aaron Black who had lead for most of the series with an early tee time that would set the bench mark for the rest of the players to try and beat. Unfortunately for Black he could only manage a two over par round of 74 to post a series total of seven under par. Black than had to patiently wait for the rest of the day until his nearest competitors had completed their afternoon rounds.
Joint overnight leader Taylor Cooper found the going tough and only managed to shoot a two over par 74 and with that new he let an opportunity to win slip by.
Unheralded touring professional Matthew Rogers would then have his chance to claim the biggest win of his career, but unfortunately for Roger’s he could not sustain the great play which saw him trail by only one shot heading into the final round and wound up finishing in fourth.
Current Order of Merit Leader Sam Brazel was making a late charge for the title after shooting a four under par 68 in the first round to move within four of the leaders heading into the final round. Brazel found form over the back nine and with an eagle on his second last hole went on to win both the FKP Series and the Peregian Springs Open.
Series organiser Vaughan Rostron was extremely happy with the 2010 FKP Series and preparations for the 2011 series are already in motion. “It’s a great series not only for the professional golfers, but also for the sponsors and golf clubs that take part in the series each year. It is great to give upcoming professionals the opportunity to play for their living and we are really looking forward to 2011 where the series will celebrate its 10th anniversary” Rostron said during presentations.

Professionals now have a couple of days off before heading to the inaugural Pine Rivers Pro Am where Sam Brazel will look to increase his lead in the 2010 Callaway Order of Merit.
