The biggest news in golf this week comes not from the course but the clubhouse with the announcement Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters, has admitted two women members.

Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina businesswoman Darla Moore are the first women to be invited to join in the club's 80 year history.

In a statement released overnight Australian time club Chairman Billy Payne, believed by many to be the most progressive member of the elite club, said “"This is a joyous occasion.

"We enthusiastically welcome Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore as members of Augusta National Golf Club.

"These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership."

Payne went on to say both women had gone through the same membership vetting process as all other members of the club.

Augusta National has been under increasing pressure to invite a woman to join with President Barrack Obama even being drawn into the debate earlier this year.

Condoleezza Rice issued a statement later in the day acknowledging the invite and saying she was proud to become a part of the club.

"I am delighted and honoured to be a member of Augusta National Golf Club," she said.

"I have visited Augusta National on several occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through this very special opportunity."

Even PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem got in on the act releasing a statement which read:

"The PGA TOUR commends Augusta National Golf Club on the news that it has invited Condolezza Rice and Darla Moore to become its first women members.

"At a time when women represent one of the fastest growing segments in both playing and following the game of golf, this sends a positive and inclusive message for our sport."

Expect to hear a lot more about this story over the coming weeks and months.
