When is a gift not a gift?

When is a gift not a great thing to get? When it nearly costs you your place in a golf tournament.

Adam Scott nearly missed his first round tee time at the AT&T event at Congressional thanks to the gift pack the players were given at the start of the week.

Included in the goodie bag was a new mobile phone and Scott, who says he normally doesn't use an alarm to wake up, decided to change his routine and test out his new toy.

''I don't know if I didn't hear it or if I didn't set the alarm right,'' he said after waking up just 40 minutes before his tee time and scrambling to the course.

Without any warm-up at all, Scott carded a double bogey and a bogey in his first three holes and finished with a four over 75 for the round.

He finished the tournament three shots out of the lead.

“I only have myself to blame,” Scott told PGATOUR.com after finishing his Sunday round. “You can argue my three over through three holes was due to my very brief warm-up on Thursday, and that might end up being the difference between winning and not this week."

It was the continuation of a 2012 pattern for Australia's highest ranked player where he seems to fire three good rounds and one poor one to finish near the lead.

“The story of my year,” he said Sunday. “I need to try and play well for four days.”
