Victorian Euan Walters has fired an exceptional round of four under-par 68 to win the $10,000 Judith Wright Stockdale and Leggo Phillip Island Golf Club Extravaganza Pro-Am Open event.
Walters, who had already had four top ten finishes in the past six days, capped of his week with the two shot win.
Taking advantage of the favourable conditions Walter’s reeled off seven birdies to put his stamp on a course where he has had little success in the past.
“This is a very important win for me, I spend a lot of time down here with Marcus (Phillip Island Club Professional) so it means a lot” Walters said at presentations.
The unique event runs over a four day period incorporating a single day Ladies, Legends, Open and Trainee Pro-Am’s. The event was a huge success with male and female professionals competing from all over Australia.
The Ladies event on the Friday was won by Portsea Trainee Sienna Lambert who fired an even par 73 to win by one shot over Robyn Sottile.
Saturday saw the Legends out on course with E-Z-GO Legends Tour Order of Merit winner Kym Olsen holding out European Senior Tour member Tim Elliott by a shot after shooting a three under-par 69.
The course was presented in sensational condition with no hint of the fact Phillip Island had one of its wettest winters on record.
Phillip Island put on a great day with weather conditions almost perfect, sunny skies and only a moderate breeze for the players to contend with.
Following the morning round legends event winner Kym Olsen was at it again leading with an even par round of 72 with Tim Elliott again one stroke behind on one over 73.
With conditions if anything improving slightly in the afternoon so did the scoring, Brock Gillard, Michael Faraone and Leighton Lyle all fired two under-par 70 to finish in a tie for second place.
Following his win, Walters has opened up a twenty seven point lead over Brad Lamb in this year’s Order of Merit race.
The next event on the Victorian Tour is the Growling Frog Golf Course Pro-Am on Tuesday 5th March.
