Walters Wins in the Wind
Sunday, 25 July 2010
Victorian Euan Walters has backed up his win at Mackay last week, to claim victory at the 2010 Pat O’Driscoll Real Estate/Tropical Auto Golf Classic held at the Capricorn Resort. With the Capricorn Resort courses presented in immaculate conditions throughout the week, drama filled the course on Sunday afternoon as the leading groups found the conditions difficult during the final round.
After starting the day five shots in front, Walters found the wet and windy conditions difficult. A bogey six at the first wasn’t the start Walters was looking for and would end up making the turn in 39. However he would remain 5 shots in front with nine holes to play, as all of his nearest challenger’s faultered.
Walters was first to steady on the back nine with birdies on the 12th and 15th. Current Sunshine Tour Order of Merit leader Sam Brazel fought his way back from a terrible opening nine of 40 to give himself a chance late in the day. Brazel chipped in for birdie on the 14th and followed it up with another at the 15th to get within four. However Walters was able to keep Brazel at bay over the closing holes to hold on and take out his first Pat O’Driscoll Real Estate/Tropical Auto Group Golf Classic by 7 shots. Walters finished on 14 under par to finish 7 shots clear of Brazel and Kiwi’s Scott Hill and Matthew Holten
Coming off four consecutive Pro Am wins earlier in the year, Brazel continues to shine on the Sunshine Tour and it will only be a matter of time until he breaks through for his first big win.
On the other hand, Holten who only received a late entry into the field due to his fine efforts in Mackay a week earlier, will take great confidence out of his performance this week and will try and go one better in Rockhampton this week.
It was an emotional win for Walter’s and it is a sign that Walters is once again returning to the form that five years ago propelled him onto the US Tour. “It is a great feeling to go back to back especially with the strength of fields. I am now really looking forward to the Ian Weigh Motors Pro Am this week, and who knows it could be third time lucky.”
Players now head to the Capricorn Country Club for the $10, 000 City of Rockhampton Pro Am on Tuesday followed by the $50,000 Ian Weigh Motors Rockhampton Pro Am starting Thursday.
