Johnson Wagner won the third PGA Tour event of his career with a two-shot victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii, while John Senden was the leading Australian.

Wagner, 31, carded a three-under final round of 67 to reach 13-under for the tournament at the Waialae Country Club.

Starting two shots behind overnight leaders Matt Every and Jeff Maggert, Wagner made an inauspicious start to the round, opening with a bogey five at the first and also carding a second bogey at the par-four sixth.

But he hit back by sinking birdies at two, seven and nine to reach the turn one-under for the day.

And the back nine proved to be trouble free, with birdies at 10 and 15 enough to seal top spot on the leaderboard and a $US990,000 prize for first place.

Wagner, whose previous victories came at the Shell Houston Open in 2008 and the Mayakoba Golf Classic last February, won ahead of a four-way tie for second place.

Americans Sean O'Hair, Harrison Frazer and Charles Howell III, together with Swede Carl Pettersson, finished level at 11-under overall.

Senden finished in a tie for 23rd place at six-under, while fellow Australian Gavin Coles was two shots further adrift at minus four.

The only other Australian to make the cut, Jarrod Lyle, carded a final round of 74 to finish in 69th place at four-over.

Every and Maggert, who went into the fourth day tied for the lead at 12-under, imploded over their last 18 holes - Every finished up with a two-over 72 for a share of sixth, 10-under for the tournament.

Maggert, meanwhile, slumped to a four-over 74 as he ended the tournament in a tie for 13th at eight-under overall alongside US PGA champion Keegan Bradley.

Defending champion Steve Stricker also fell to a 74 to finish in a share of 38th place at four-under.
