Skinner wins Paul King Trophy in playoff
Monday, 17 December 2012
Matt Skinner has taken out this year’s Trainee Order of Merit Championship at Pacific Golf Club after having to go to a playoff with Evan Sinclair.
Second year trainee Skinner and Gold Coast based Sinclair both dominated the field shooting 2 under for the day. With the top 30 ranked trainees in the Queensland Order of Merit there were many that could have scored better to take the title. It was a nervous wait whilst the pair watched many of their better ranked peers putting out on the 18th waiting for the score that would better theirs.
“I thought 2 under was a good score on this course” said Sinclair. “But when you there are players who have yet to come in who have had wins this year you can never be totally sure it will hold up.”
Conditions were typical summer conditions with temperatures in the high 30’s and many players struggling to find consistency. Queensland PGA icon Paul King was on hand to present Skinner as the winner who was honoured to receive the revered trophy.
“This is really unexpected and a fantastic result” said Skinner. “I really didn’t think I was in with a chance going into the round but thing started going my way early and I was able to keep the momentum going. The course was in great condition and I just looked at taking every opportunity. Going to a playoff is always a pressure situation but I/m just thankful I could hold together.”
The tournament marks the end of the 2012 QLD Trainee Calendar with all player looking to have a rest before starting the 2013 season in mid January.
