Jones takes lead at Hawks Nest

Monday, 23 August 2010

Kurri Kurri Trainee Professional Matthew Jones has taken an early lead after round one of the NSW PGA Trainee Championships at Hawks Nest Golf Club. The Hunter Valley local posted a three under par round of 69 in trying conditions to hold a one stroke lead from Sydney professionals Ben Gear and Simon Vale.

Constant rain and cold weather restricted scoring as much of the field failed to come to grips with the tight Hawks Nest layout. Defending champion Andrew McCormack (Charlestown Golf Club) made a solid start to the tournament posting an even par round to sit in a tie for eighth position.

Rebecca Blain and Samantha Whittle head the female contingent with a score of 77 (tied 35th) in one of the unique professional sporting events that sees the females competing against the male competitors.

The tournament continues tomorrow with the field being cut to the top 50 professionals after round two.
