Third year PGA of Australia Trainee Quinton Howe from Kew Golf Club, Victoria, has won the CPM Southern PGA Trainee Championship in a tense finish.

Howe, who sat three shots back heading into the final round, fired a four under par 68 at the Tocumwal Golf Club to force a play-off with New South Welshman Kyle Grant.

Nerves seemed to find the better of Howe on the first hole of the playoff when his tee shot ended in the trees.

With Grant finding the middle of the fairway he appeared to have the upper hand, yet a brilliant shot second from Howe had him right back in the playoff,

With the pressure mounting first year Trainee Grant left his bunker shot short resulting in him two putting and bogeying the first playoff hole.

Howe confidently putted out for par having drawn on his playing experiences that saw him win the Rich River Trainee Classic as well as compete on the PGA Tour of Australasia earlier in 2012.

Having claimed his second CPM Southern PGA Trainee Championship Howe was happy with his trip to the Murray Region.

“I’m extremely happy with the win, I love the course and have enjoyed each time coming up here for the last three years”, said Howe.

Laura Richards from Claremont Golf Club, Tasmania, was the highest placed female and finished tied for fourth place, handing her the Tasmanian Trainee Championship title.

Chris Duke from Blackwood Golf Club was the highest placed South Australian crowning him back to back South Australian Trainee Champion.

The Trainees came from all over the country and had a fantastic week with the course in superb condition and the club going out of their way to ensure all had an enjoyable week.

Tocumwal Golf Club’s President Bob Burns was on hand to present the trophies.

“I would like to congratulate the winners and thank the Trainees for visiting our club and look forward to seeing you back next year”, said Bob.

“The staff and volunteers did a great job and I’d like to thank the Members for accommodating the Trainees throughout the week”.
