Fairfax unstoppable in Brisbane
Thursday, 13 September 2012
Little known touring professional Gavin Fairfax has today added his name to illustrious group of champions after taking out the Metropolitan Funerals Brisbane Invitational.
Fairfax set the course a light firing a seven under par 65 which included four birdies, two eagles and a solitary bogey on his opening hole. The round was a new course record for the revamped Yeerongpilly Course and gave Fairfax a three shot victory over Scott Laycock and Steven Jeffress. Henry Epstein finished in solo fourth with a 69, while Craig Hasthorpe and Max McCardle tied for fifth a further shot behind.
Lucky to even find himself in the field, Fairfax relied on an invite just to play in the limited field event and he was certainly grateful for being given the opportunity. “Today’s round was just so unexpected. A bogey at my opening hole did not see me get off to the start that I would have liked, but my game has been in good shape and I just had to hang in there. It is a great feeling to add my name with the likes of Peter Senior and Terry Price and I really need to thank the Brisbane Golf Club for giving me the opportunity to play”.
With the Metropolitan Funerals Brisbane Invitational also being classed as a Divisional event the win for Fairfax will also give him the added bonus of moving up a number of spots in the exemption categories for the next 12 months, giving him a start in to almost every Pro Am event. “It’s nice to know that I am guaranteed a start into almost every Pro Am held in Australia for the next 12 months. It's nice being able to schedule my next twelve months not having to worry about whether or not I am going to gain a start”.
Professionals will now make their way to the $60,000 Norris Motor Group Royal Queensland Cup to be played the Royal Queensland Golf Club tomorrow. Anthony Brown and Josh Younger will be out to defend the title they won last year, but with a quality field teeing it up in this year’s event defending their title is certainly going to be a tough assignment.
