Baxter emerges at Flinders
Thursday, 28 February 2013
South Australian Shane Baxter has fired an inspiring five under-par 64 to win the $12,500 Flinders Pro-Am supported by Bendigo Bank and Mornington Mazda.
Baxter, who took advantage of the friendlier morning conditions, posted six birdies including one at the famous Coffin hole on his way to a two shot win.
“I decided to get back into golf so I resigned from my job last week to have a go, hopefully today’s result will help me on the way” Baxter said at presentations.
For the second event in a row the early players were confronted with warm humid conditions with little breeze.
The calm conditions did not last long as Bass Straight whipped up a strong southerly making scoring more than a handful.
Baxter’s 64 left him two shots clear of Victorian pair Ben Weatherly and Richard Blake who both shot three under-par 66
The seaside layout was presented in excellent condition with all players raving about the quality of the greens in particular.
As the day progressed scoring became a harder prospect with most players struggling to make an impact on the leader board.
Safety Beach Head Professional Shane Johnson was the exception carding an outstanding round of one under-par 68 to finish alone in fourth place.
Weatherly and Blake’s round of 66 held on to finish in a tie for second place.
With many of the Victorian Order of Merit leaders in New Zealand Euan Walters took advantage drawing level with Brad Lamb at the top with Victorian PGA Champion David McKenzie four points back in third place.
The next event on the Victorian Tour is the Lang Lang Golf Club Pro-Am on Thursday 28th February.
