Baker-Finch wins Legends Tour Championship

Wednesday, 14 December 2011

Ian Baker-Finch was the headline attraction at the 2011 Australian Legends Tour Championship and he did not let the promoters down.

Starting the final round four shots in front of his nearest competitor at seven-under par, Baker-Finch stumbled early dropping three shots in his opening nine holes. In true champion style however, Baker-Finch reeled off three birdies on the back nine to close with an even par round of 72 and a six shot victory.

Allan Cooper (QLD), who played alongside Baker-Finch in the final group was under pressure from the start to mount a challenge however it never gained momentum as he eventually closed with a final round of two-over par and good enough for outright second.

The Byron Bay Golf Course was presented in spectacular condition however Tournament Officials were dealt a difficult three days with torrential rain and storms inhibiting play on numerous occasions.

With most of day two’s play abandoned, Club and PGA Officials came up with the innovative solution to ensure the 54 hole tournament could be completed. Players returned to the course at 6:30am on day three to complete their second rounds before the third and final round teed off using a shotgun start at 1:30pm.

Baker-Finch made an emotional acceptance speech praising the Byron Bay Golf Club for their hospitality, great golf course and the importance of the event on the Legends Tour Calender.

A “roar” from the large crowd of sponsors, guests, club members, and players erupted when IBF said he would return next year to defend his title.

The Byron Bay Golf Club has now staged major Legends Championships for the last 5 years and season ending Legends Tour Championship is quickly becoming a talking point and highlight for the PGA professionals and amateur players.
