A slice of history at Wynnum
Monday, 28 November 2011
A record breaking day at the Wynnum Golf Club has ended with three professionals claiming their piece of history after Adam Crawford, Edward Stedman and Michael Ferguson all fired rounds of six under par 64 to claim victory at the 2011 Bartons/BMD Pro Am.
It would be Crawford who would first post the number to beat playing in the morning field, but it wouldn’t be long until Stedman would return the same score early in the afternoon. However the afternoon belonged to Ferguson with the 59 year old winding back the clock with six birdies and an eagle to equal both Crawford and Stedman.
“I had a great day with my playing partners and it was just one of those rounds when things just went my way. It’s nice to win at Wynnum, a club that I have enjoyed playing in the past. I now look forward to get back playing of Legends Tour events in Sydney later this week and with the form I am now starting to show it, would be nice to walk away with a few more victories” Ferguson said after his win.
The Bartons/BMD Pro Am is has gone from strength to strength in recent years and has come a long way since its inaugural event way back in 1979.
Former Wynnum Golf Club professional Paul King is certainly surprised at what the Pro Am has grown to over the past 32 years. “When Doug Barton and I first met to talk about hosting a Pro Am tournament in 1979, we never thought it would be the event that it is today. It is great to have hosted so many great players over the past 30+ years and we certainly look forward to hosting this great Pro Am into the future”.
This year’s Pro Am again played host to some of Australia’s great professionals with 1991 British Open Champion Ian Baker Finch also finding the course to his liking firing a 67, while United States Tour regulars Marc Leishman(65) and Rod Pampling(73) all took part in Australia’s largest one day Pro Am.
On a day that was conducive to low scoring 52 players from the 87 man field were able to shoot even par or better.
Professionals will now turn their attention to the Twin Waters Pro Am tomorrow before heading to the Links Hope Island Golf Club on Thursday for the annual Peter Senior Charity Pro Am.
