It’s every golfer’s dream to go on tour. To hop from one great golf course to the next where your only worry is holing that 4 foot putt on the last. Well they might not be teeing off with Tiger, Phil and Geoff, but for 20 or so golfing diehards in Bunbury, Western Australia, the Bunbury Holden Scramble Tour (BHST) is the next best thing.
Initiated and organised by Bunbury Holden, the Holden Scramble Tour consists of four to six teams that play in every Holden Scramble sponsored by Bunbury Holden. And there are a few! Bunbury Holden sponsor Scrambles at Bunbury, Binningup, Capel, Donnybrook and Sanctuary Golf Clubs, with Bunbury Golf Club and Sanctuary Golf Resort running two events each year.
The BHST is lead by two mad keen golfers and Bunbury Holden Dealer Principals, Mike Fagan and Gavin Billington who play in every Holden Scramble they can.
“Mike has been involved since the start in ’92, and I’ve been involved for about 14 years now,” said Gavin.
The BHST started as a friendly game of golf between friends and has now grown into a group of nearly thirty friends and clients.
“We started with a core group of clients and friends of myself and Michael”, said Gavin, “and they’ve remained a part of it all this whole time.”
Paul Morgan, Head Professional at Bunbury Golf Club and servicing Professional to some of the smaller clubs in the area explains it’s more than just a game of golf for those ‘on Tour.’
“There’s a bus that comes and picks them up and every year they get something with ‘Bunbury Holden Scramble Tour’ on it. This year they all got hats, it’s great.”
Gavin agrees, “Yeah, we normally give them something. This year they have hats, in the past we’ve given them things like cooler bags and even shirts.”
Last year, a team from Bunbury qualified to the Championship Final and Gavin went along and supported them as the Sponsoring dealer. A keen golfer, he said he would love to be invited back but as a player. Well persistence seems to have paid off for Gavin and his teammates as they have recently qualified to the Regional Finals after taking out the last event at Bunbury Golf Club.
“Yeah it’s great!” said Gavin. “Hopefully we can play well at the Regional Final.”
The Bunbury Holden Scramble Tour hits Donnybrook Golf Club in the first week of August before concluding at the Sanctuary Golf Resort in September.
