“Beautiful one day, perfect the next!” Where better to host the pinnacle of Australia’s longest running pro-amateur teams’ golf event, the Holden Scramble than in the sunshine state of Queensland.
The PGA of Australia recently announced that the Holden Scramble Championship Final in 2010 will head to the magnificent Twin Waters Golf Club, host of the Championship Final for the past six years and 12 times since the events inauguration in 1992.
Located at Twin Waters on Queensland’s idyllic Sunshine Coast, it is easy to see why Novotel Twin Waters Resort is such a desirable location for an event like the Holden Scramble Final. Boasting an 18-hole Championship golf course and four star accommodation set amongst 14 hectares of natural bushland and manicured gardens, the course is situated around a private seven hectare beach lined lagoon and will host a duo of major golfing events on the Sunshine Coast in December.
At the conclusion of the Holden Scramble Final, Twin Waters then hosts the Pump Junior Festival of Golf - the ultimate golfing experience for nearly 100 budding juniors from Australia and overseas to be held from December 7-9 .
These events are the amateur golfing experience of a lifetime and lead into Australia’s premier golfing event, the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola to be held at the Hyatt Regency, Coolum from December 9-12.
Peter Egan, Senior Economic Development Officer-Major Events, at the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, said the Holden Scramble Championship Final was a great opportunity to give scramblers a taste of paradise on the Sunshine Coast.
“Although only approximately 250 golfers and sponsors enjoy the outstanding hospitality of the Novotel Twin Waters Resort and the Twin Waters Golf Club at the Championship Final each year, many more golfers have become aware of the Sunshine Coast through their participation in the Holden Scramble”, says Egan.
As well as its illustrious history with the Holden Scramble, another major reason for the Championship Final staying in Twin Waters is due to the tremendous support provided by the Sunshine Coast Council. The council has been involved with the Holden Scramble for two years and has worked tirelessly on promoting golf in the sunshine coast region through their “stay and play” promotion and through sponsoring the PGA Championship for nearly a decade.
“The Holden Scramble Championship Final is on the weekend prior to the Australian PGA Championship and the staging of the Pump Junior Festival of Golf between these two flagship events has created a unique ‘Festival of Golf’ on the Sunshine Coast”, says Egan.
Over the next six months Scramblers all around the country will be practising, playing and winning their way through to the Final via a series of Local and Regional Holden Scramble events. Along the way they’ll pick up the expertise of PGA Professionals, and for a lucky few they will finish the event with a PGA Tour Professional in their team.
One such professional to have taken part is Australasian and US Tour player Cameron Percy.
“Last year I played at the Holden Scramble Final at the lovely Twin Waters with the boys from Muswellbrook and we had a great time”, said Percy, who has won the coveted title on two occasions.
Only time will tell just who will be teeing it up on the glorious Sunshine Coast in December, but as the old saying goes, “you’ve got to be in it to win it!”
